While birdonthewire is based in the Leicestershire countryside and not London’s Carnaby Street, it does not mean we are restricted by the confines of a rural setting – on the contrary, we rub shoulders with a huge amount of creative and dynamic businesses also based in the heart of the UK.
When first moving away from busy London and from the ‘centre’ of the communications industry, I was amazed at the amount of fantastic home-grown companies right on the doorstep, from artisan stained-glass artists to entrepreneurs building million pound businesses.
Nearby Leicester is known for its links to the rag trade and Northamptonshire, with its border just a few fields away, still plays a key role in the UK shoe industry.
We know the world is smaller thanks to improved travel and of course digital communications, but it’s great to know that there is as much talent locally as there is in large cities.
Over the weekend this came to life with an event put on by @studionl + @hustle_group at a Creative Hub in Leicestershire. There was a wealth of creative, interesting and inspiring makers all passionate about their industry and what they can bring to it. This group of people thrives not because they are based in the city but because they are able to still have a good living based in a smaller community.
As much as birdonthewire still loves the bustle of London, these days we’ve swapped skyscrapers for skylarks and we are more productive for it!
